These are books I've loved—some old, some newly discovered.

My hope is that they will inspire and challenge you in your walk with Christ.

If you've found any of these books helpful, I'd love to hear from you.

Hidden Christmas

by Timothy Keller

One of the first indications of the Christmas season is the appearance of lights. Lights on trees, candles in windows, radiance everywhere. [...] But the lights are not just decorative; they are symbolic. [...] The world is a dark place, and we will never find our way or see reality unless Jesus is our Light.

Christianity does not agree with the optimistic thinkers who say, 'We can fix things if we try hard enough.' Nor does it agree with the pessimists who see only a dystopian future.

The message of Christianity is, instead, 'Things really are this bad, and we can't heal or save ourselves. Things are really this dark - nevertheless, there is hope.'

The Christmas message is that 'on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.' Notice that it doesn't say from the world a light has sprung, but upon the world a light has dawned. It has come from outside. There is light outside of this world, and Jesus has brought that light to save us; indeed He is the Light.

'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.' John 8:12

Rewriting Your Broken Story

by Kenneth Boa

An eternal perspective is one that sees that while life on Earth is important, it's not all there is.

All the pain, sorrow, disappointment and brokenness in our lives can be used to draw us to Jesus. These times can actually become, as we look back, moments of grace. They can shatter our autonomy, our independence and our arrogance.

When these moments come that bring you to the realisation that you are broken, that you are lost or that your story is not what you hoped it would be, it is a gift. It is wisdom whispering for you to seize the day. Listen closely. Wisdom is not reminding you to simply make the most out of life and gather rosebuds before it's too late. Wisdom is telling you that you are here for a reason, that life exists because of God, and that your identity and story is with your Creator. God's powerful play will go on with or without you, but He has placed you on the stage in His story, and you're invited to contribute a verse. â€‹

What will your verse be?

You Are Never Alone

by Max Lucado

When life feels depleted, does God care? When life grows dark and stormy, does He notice? If I'm facing the fear of death, will He help me?

The answer in the life-giving miracles in the Gospel of John is a resounding yes. You are never alone, never without help, never without hope.

Do you know these miracles? Do you desire to know the God who will meet you in the midst of life's messes?

Trusting God

by Jerry Bridges

Where is God in all of this?

Can you really trust God when adversity strikes and fills your life with pain? Does He indeed come to the rescue of those who seek Him?

Do you have such a relationship with God and such confidence in Him that you believe He is with you in your adversity?

The purpose of this book is twofold: First I desire to glorify God by acknowledging His sovereignty and His goodness. Second, I desire to encourage God's people by demonstrating from Scripture that God is in control of their lives, that He does indeed love them, and that He works out all the circumstances of their lives for their ultimate good.

The Cost of Discipleship

by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Cheap grace is the deadly enemy of our Church. Grace without price; grace without cost!

We are fighting today for costly grace.

Such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. It is costly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner. It is costly, because it cost God the life of His Son, and what has cost God much cannot be cheap for us. Above all, it is grace because God did not reckon His Son too dear a price to pay for our life, but delivered Him up for us. Costly grace confronts us as a gracious call to follow Jesus.
